CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

MORNING.

NO BANYAN.

Slate put his hood up and strode as casually as he could out of the castle. He headed off in the direction of the woods as he called for Yilia.

“Did I scare you off?”

Slate stopped and turned.

There was Odion, coming after him, grinning as if he was very pleased with himself.

“I’m going after Banyan,” said Slate.

“So, she did go to the Academy, and she should have been back by now,” said Odion. “I’m coming with you.”

“What? No.”

“I’ll get you in. It’ll be easier that way,” said Odion. “Besides, no way am I letting you rescue Banyan without me. If Banyan needs rescuing, I’m part of the rescue party.”

Slate folded his arms over his chest. “Hey, Odion, let me clue you in on something. You are the villain of this story.”

“I am not,” said Odion, scoffing. He lifted his hand into the air, and then above, moments later, Mirra soared in, icy wings spread.

Slate was sputtering. “How can you say that?”

“How can you say that?”

Mirra landed on the ground and eyed Yilia, who snorted out smoke and backed away from the ice dragon.

“Just last night, you tried to bite me and turn me into an ice monster.”

“All I did was try to give you the gift. Make you practically indestructible and one with everyone in the Family, a perfect sense of peace and togetherness that transcends all pain and sadness.”

“Well, see this is why you can’t rescue Banyan,” said Slate.

“Should we race?” said Odion. “See who gets there first?”

“Fuck you,” snarled Slate, running for Yilia.

“Just let’s work together!” yelled Odion.

“No,” said Slate, climbing onto his dragon’s back.

“Truce, all right? Until Banyan’s safe? You don’t try to kill me; I don’t try to bite you?”

Slate paused. “I can’t even trust you.”

“Sure, you can. I’m yours, come on, I was two seconds away from giving my unstretched asshole to you last night—”

“You can’t feel pain anymore—”

“And you treat that like it’s nothing.”

Slate shook his head, looking down from the dragon’s back on Odion.

“Truce?” said Odion.

“Fine,” said Slate. “Truce. But the second you do something shifty, it’s off.”
